First flying on the 18th May 1951 and entering service with 138 Squadron in 1955, the Valiant represented the forefront of Britain’s nuclear deterrent. It was also the first to go to war when the aircraft participated in the Suez Crisis. Among other firsts were the dropping of a British nuclear weapon and the first Jet tanker. From 1964 metal fatigue forced the early withdrawal of the type after 107 had been built.
